COLOR ON THE WALLS

______________________________________

I’ve compiled mixtapes with the common theme of “summer” numerous times. However, Color on the Walls was actually put together during the summer and summarizes my experiences and feelings of music jubilation at Sasquatch and the Free Press Summer Fest. The opening track, “Atlantic,” is by GIVERS, a five member based Louisiana band. Though it starts out relatively slow, the build-up captures the lively presence of their 45 minute set and flows into the second song, “Cold Feet,” by LIAM FINN; it then continues with new tracks from MISTER HEAVENLY (whose members include Nick Thorburn of Islands/The Unicorns, Ryan Kattner of Man Man, and Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse) and, from another Sasquatch performer(s), DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE. The following songs, by bands such as RUSSIAN RED, LOVER LOVER, and THE ELECTED carry on a more pop and alternative route- perfect to listen to if, for example, you’re on a 3 hour flight from Seattle to Texas or if you’re just driving around. And then there’s CULTS and they’re duet, “Bumper,” which has been on repeat since my first listen and is the only song I’ve actually listened to on their self-titled album because I can’t seem to get past this song. The “previous track” button has been used quite often for the IS TROPICAL track as well, which is a feel-good song that will “rifle through your mind.” Electronic based melodies continue with songs from DALE EARNHARDT JR. JR., KYLE ANDREWS, and ST. LUCIA. CUT COPY were one of the highlights from the FPSF festival and their infectious, dance-inducing tunes had to be included. Along the lines of “infectious,” FOSTER THE PEOPLE and HOORAY FOR EARTH’s tracks are just that, while having, overall, a more “epic” sound. The mixtape concludes with “Helpless,” by FRIENDLY FIRES- it slows the mood down a bit but still has enough groove to keep you moving.
